44 Jesus who stayed for us

Luke 9:28-36
Isaiah 49:1-3
T Event of the change mountain

"And some eight days after these sayings, it came about that He took along Peter and John and James, and went up to the mountain to pray." (28) The text of this morning is a thing called "the event of the change mountain" (9:28-36), but it seemed to be in the high mountain which was near the highest peak of Hermon mountain, after confession of Peter, they still went north from Caesarea Philipps. He has taken three disciples, probably it would have the implication of witness of being generated from now. This article is taken up by both of Matthew and Mark, too; however when we see only Verse 28, "some eight days after these saying" and "the order of names of three disciples" "to pray", because the article of Luke is considerably different from Matthew and Mark, it is supposed a thing from the other document. I don't know whether he used the other document, but at least Luke seemed to have a unique editing policy for him. Basing on it, I want to hear a message of Luke.

"And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming." (29) I want to supplement this state a little more. "His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light." (Matthew 17:2) "His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them." (Mark 9:3) And Luke supplements it, also. "Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him." (32) I supplement it, but I can not understand it well; but, surely the state of the glory of Jesus would be brightness that these three disciples who conveyed this could not understand it. There were articles in the Old Testament such as "Then Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God." (Exodus 3:6) and "Woe is me, for I am afraid ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts," (Isaiah 6:5); and it was said that the person who watched glory of God died. However, the disciples have watched the glory. Even if their expression was poor, there was no other way. Rather we want to think about honor allowed to have an interview with such a Lord of glory before long.

U Not a kingdom of this ground

Probably when the disciples who fell asleep woke up while Jesus was praying, Jesus who changed to a figure of the glory was talking with Elijah and Moses. They testify it, "who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him." (31-32). This is a description only by Luke, but because there is saying "were talking", it seems to show Elijah and Moses having talked with Jesus (Jesus was a listener); therefor this description would say the cross of Jesus was a plan of salvation of God from old days. "Moses and Elijah who, appearing in glory"; it comes to Elijah and Moses, so it tells that they were sent by God and came to Jesus. To tell the will of God to Jesus, (He should be hung on the cross as a Son of Man (9:22)), would it be a judgment of God that they were more suitable than an angel? About Verse 32, it is thought to have written their situation at that time as testimony to verify that this testimony is not a dream and an illusion. The disciples put it down while remembering the situation at that time repeatedly many times, and it would have become the source material of this article.

However, Jesus has been changed to a figure of the glory, what will it mean? Originally Jesus was that figure. However, He took the figure of the person to save the crime of us and came to us. It is thought that Jesus returned to in an original figure to reply to "Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory". The disciples were surprised and frightened by fear when saw this change, and they suggested one thing with a certain determination. "Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles; one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah." (33) There are many people who regard this tabernacle as "a thing preventing cold", but probably it is not so. If Jesus who became an original figure just stay here and do this place a glory country of God adding Elijah and Moses, even if You do not walk the way to a cross willingly, the purpose of You will be realized. Therefore, for that purpose, "We build a tabernacle which should be called that monument"; their wish was earnest. "And it came about, as these were parting from Him", Luke unusually put in a briefing; but they would be absorbed in such a idea to detain these two people.

V Jesus who stayed for us

However, not only the suggestion of tabernacle has passed away, but their ardor was also wrapped up, and nothing remained; "And while saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them" (34). This cloud will be obviously indicating there is God in there. "And they were afraid as they entered the cloud." (34); it was fear that Jesus might disappear with Elijah and Moses. Elijah was the only person who was raised in the sky without knowing the death once (1 Kings 2:11). Possibly the disciples might feel fear of the death of their own. Anyway, their idea came to a deadlock.

And the scene which Peter was saying messily changed completely. "And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!'" (35) But, strange words are added first. "Peter_not realizing what he was saying." (33) This is not the thing of Gospel reporter, Luke and of Mark (Matthew ignores it); but probably it is thought that it was the testimony of such their own message. At that time, they could not understand it at all, but when they recollected this later, they would have known that this event of the changed mountain clarified the plan of God. The article that God is always with us made clear that a plan of God had begun to advance for realization. The speech that they heard from a cloud "This is My Son, My chosen One" , it was same as the time that Jesus received the Baptism (Luke 3:22); that plan's center was Jesus, it became clear for the disciples recollected it calmly later. Surely, because they have heard testimony of John the Baptist, they would consider about it of the latter half, "Thou art My beloved Son, in Thee I am well-pleased." (3:22), and "This is My Son, My chosen One" (34). When He received Baptism, it was the words of blessing from Father to Jesus, who stood at the starting line as the Messiah. When I thought about it, for what of Jesus the blessing have been repeated again?; finally I noticed it, it was not that He became a figure of the glory, but it was that He came back to the figure which they got used to and having been stayed with them, though Elijah and Moses had disappeared with a cloud. It was a blessing for Jesus who chose Via Crucis. Therefore, "And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone." (36), both of Matthew, Mark and Luke put it in the completion of this article. It was a blessing for Jesus who had chosen Via Crucis.

"Listen to Him!" (34), it remind us a promise of Moses saying "The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him." (Deuteronomy 18:15). The disciples announced this event later for a while from the revival of Jesus; probably, they would remember that they became the person who hear the words of the Lord, and therefore became the person who serve to a church. Let's pray, we want to do so.
