3 To answer God's blessing

Luke 1:24-38
Isaiah 9:6-7

T As a mother

It is from the place known as the Annunciation, this morning. "In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee, called Nazareth."(26) "The sixth month"; it was counted after
Elisabeth became pregnant. In this sense, the article of the Annunciation of Mary begins from Elisabeth.(24) When Elisabeth became mother, Mary became mother likewise; it seems to be the center of this point. Mary is a role of mother of Jesus from a beginning. There, we can hear it is hidden, a claim of Luke that Jesus became thoroughly a man.

A beautiful commemorative assembly hall called a notice church is built in the town of Nazareth. In the corner of the large assembly hall, there was the small hut where Mary lived in, but it was a quite poor hut seemed to be it. Would it be there? Gabriel comes over. "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you."(28) Mary was "greatly troubled at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this might be."(29) But Gabriel says. "Do not afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end."(30-33) "How can this be, since I am a virgin?". (34) The answer of Mary was the same as Zacharias. However, Gabriel answers her gently. "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God. And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. For nothing will be impossible with God."(35-37)

U The One born to Mary

"The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you"; this seems to be the one of the central subject of concern of Luke, but before touching that core, Luke seems to be watching the figure of "the One born to Mary".

The first one is that it was said "you shall name Him Jesus". "Jesus" is Joshua's name in Greek, he is Moses' successor, and that meaning is "The Lord save". Mary remembered it well, even though she was at a loss, and she named Him "Jesus". It seems that Gabriel's word deeply remained in Maria's mind. The world put confusion on confusion, and would "the time of salvation of the Lord" rise up?

The second one is that He (Jesus) is "called Son of God". "He will be great" (32), "He will be called the Son of the Most High"(32) and "He shall be called the Son of God"(35); and these titles of the best are repeated many times, but by whom the born person is "called" so? If He is called by the people, it will be that "the person who is not Son of God is called Son of God". When temporary enthusiasm cooled down, many people who called Jesus "Son of God" denied Him; we must not forget it. However, Mary was told "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; for that reason the holy offspring shall be called the Son of God."(35) It was declaration of God that "a born person was a sacred person inherently". God called Jesus "My beloved son"(Luke 3:22). God is going to give us such One. It was an outcome from God's love. Would we call Jesus "Son of God", "God Himself", and offer our faith? Because, many seniors of faith have confessed it in that way.

The third one is that He inherits the throne of David. There is it in Verse 27, "a virgin(Mary) engaged to a man whose name was Joseph". It seems she belonged to a family of the priest (perhaps, Aaron); and this will be a description given to priority that Jesus is a person under the throne of David. However, why will it be the throne of David? There is it in the second Samuel in this way. "I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever..."(7:12-16) It is said that this is the Messiah prophecy that prophet Nathan told to David, but it is piled up for the words, "He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end."(33). Jesus is the Messiah and "His kingdom will have no end", it points at the kingdom which Jesus builds up. The people invited to there were "people of the Lord". Luke's hot thought, "I also want to be there", seems to come here.

V To answer God's blessing

"The Lord saves", "Jesus is a Son of God" and "the Messiah will come"; the people of then had to hear these message. However, when we hear that many people who called Jesus "Son of God" denied it at the time their temporary enthusiasm comes cool down; will it not be right itself in this present age? Luke seems to be talking to us exceeding the age; the one who should hear that Jesus is "the Messiah" and "the Saviour" is us rightly.

"The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you" Particularly, against this, I think; Mary answered, "Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; be it done to me according to your word"(38). It was her reply for the pity of God to Israel where "the Son of God" "the Messiah" is born. How long the Israeli people looked forward to the appearance of "the One who save"! She was one of them, too. Many "Messiahs" came out so far, but they have disappeared like a bubble. Because they are the human being Messiah whom they stood, and they put up a rebel army as a leader of the people praying for the secession from ruler Rome. It was the times when a small revolt was repeated. However, Mary heard intervention of God for the Messiah birth. She did not have any doubt word against them; He inherits the throne as a child of David and is called Son of God / the Holy One. Will not it be because she heard them as the words of God? (Isaiah 9:6-7)

Mary heard that "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you". Here, we will think about "the power of the Most High". God has power and He can use it as expected. Power has it with power or physical strength, in various ways, but the power said to here is words of the etymologies same as exploding power / dynamite. And now, He is going to use that power. The reason why Jewish people fell into confusion and the miserable situation is that they had forgotten God and ran to crimes, greed or the hypocrisy. God could use that power to blow up as His "anger", against them. The deluge of the Noah times was that power. However now, God is going to use His power as "a blessing". The reason that God made up mind to send Messiah / Jesus, was for using this blessing. Mary would hear that blessing from words of God. Therefore she answered "Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; be done to me according to your word". We must hear this as her confession of faith. To answer this God's blessing, there might be nothing except our faith. When Luke finished writing this article of Mary heartily, surely he sympathized with the faith of Mary, I think. He also felt the same blessing of the Lord. In the rear of Jesus birth such a simple faith has breathed; we want to engrave this in our heart. And we also want to share the same faith of Mary and Luke, aren't you?
