Jeremiah 3
Speak the words of the Lord!

Jeremiah 2:1-19
Romans 1:14-17
T However, God does not change

"Now the word of the Lord came to me saying, 'Go and proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying,' "Thus says the Lord." (1-2) It is not clear when it was, but, it seems to be the early days of the time Jeremiah received a calling. The activity of Jeremiah was a garden of the sanctuaries mainly. Because it is thought that he was still in Anathoth, he would have come out of there every day and would have repeated and talked the words of the Lord many times. "I remember concerning you the devotion of your youth, the love of your betrothals, your following after Me in the wilderness, through a land not sown. Israel was holy to the Lord, the first of His harvest; all who ate of it became guilty; evil came upon them, declares the Lord.'" (2-3) Will God review the Israeli history?Jeremiah says with the delicate sense, it was "the engagement era" (the times of the bride, 新共同訳). Probably, it was Exod. and the conclusion of the contract with God and the law conferment in Mount Sinai; it might be said that it was the time that Israel ticked away the decisive history for the future. It will be able to say, it stamped a seal to the salvation history of Israel. However, even in such times, Israel had a problem. They became arrogant and were attracted by high culture of Cannan, and caused a fight between tribes, it was various. However, they loved God with all their heart, and said without a hesitation, "a person against us is a person against God". It may be said that it was era that the most basic theology was established, Israel was chosen people of God. The saying that "Israel was holy to the Lord, the first of His harvest;", it seems to suggest that cultus theology was fixed in them, as well as elitism and law theology.

However, it is said that the beautiful and mutual relations of God and Israel which was built between Israel, collapse and left. "What injustice did your fathers find in Me, that they went far from Me and walked after emptiness and became empty?" (5); it suggests that there is the sign which is going to already leave from God in that time; but the problem is the present. They always had problems concerning anti-God. However, God does not change. "And I brought you into the fruitful land, to eat its fruit and its good things." (7) "But, you came and defiled My land, and My inheritance you made an abomination." (7) And God says, "The priests did not say, 'Where is the Lord?' and those who handle the law did not know Me; the rulers also transgressed against Me, and the prophets prophesied by baal and walked after things that did not profit." (8).

U There is still a chance

Chosen people Israel of God was not a monolith, and having been each tribal alliance community (Amphictyony). The alliance community heard this message in some kind of meeting (a certain annotation man says, it would be cultus) named Israel, but what was talked there was the beautiful history of them and God, and it was also estrangement from their God. And God blames that estrangement, not only as a thing of past ancestors, but as the thing of their present and in the future. There is it thus, "'Therefore I will yet contend with you, ' declares the Lord, 'And with your sons' sons I will contend.'" (9). Israel was sacred people of His own God. Though the establishment and continuation of Israel only depended on the love of God who assumed them a thing of Himself, would they have lost sight of love of the God? They said the continuation of Israel does not depend on God, and have cut off God. In Verse 6, there is it in this way. "And they did not say, 'Where is the Lord who brought us out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of deep darkness, through a land that no one crossed and where no man dwelt?'"

It seems to be talked as a past thing yet, but it is revealed that they were the people hearing a message of Jeremiah at there, when we look at Verse 10 or later. "For My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to hew for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water." (13) Two evils, those are estrangement from God who is a source of the life, and exchange the idol (it was made by human being) with God, and are going to cling to it. Jeremiah never recognizes the gods of the foreigner as God; but, about the awe that a foreigner has for their God, respects it. Because, it is not God faith of Israel and no changing thing. They did not know the essence of God. However, they did not exchange gods to what is not gods (11). Because, islands of Kitimu point to the entire west side of the heart of the island of Cyprus, and people of Kedar points the nomads of the desert leading to Mesopotamia from Palestine; therefore it is thought it means the whole Gentile from west to east. However, Israel violated the folly that the foreigner did not do; God grieves and Jeremiah talks about it.

However, God still regrets Israel as sacred people of Himself at this stage. What is talked here, it would be the advice of the repentance, but it was not decisive ruin. God seems to hope that Israel repents and backs to God, as people of Himself. There is still a chance.

V Speak the words of the Lord!

However, Israel does not have an ear to hear. "Is Israel a slave? Or is he a homeborn servant?" (14), God give off the question that is not worth strangely at all. Because, they have freed from the house of Egyptian as slave. However, they were attacked by a young lion (Assyria), and just recently, the north Israel kingdom has been done to game? Have you left it? Both Egypt and Assyria are the same. Because Verse 15-17 describe a fact of the Northern Kingdom extinction by Assyria, "His cities have been destroyed, without inhabitant." (15) and "Have you not done this to yourself?" (17); these should translate in a past form like 新共同訳. If we think about it, we will be able to understand that it is a true purpose of this message that they still have a chance. "But now what are you doing on the road to Egypt, to drink the water of the Nile?" (18); they were going to depend on Egypt on the occasion of a crisis over and over again. Now, when the new Babylonia military will be coming for attack to them (there is no sign at this point yet), they are going to request Egypt for a reinforcement again. Will not God be reflected in their eyes anymore? As a result, it becomes Babylon captivity. "Or what are you doing on the road to Assyria, to drink the waters of the Euphrates?" (18); God grieves and Jeremiah is amazed, too. Jeremiah understood well what kind of situation the people of the countryman were under, carefully; and he has understood also well why a message of God was so severe to these people. There is one word repeated many times from the beginning of Chapter 1. "Declares the Lord" Probably, when Jeremiah talked to the people, he would have been as the completion of words of God, by adding this word. It becomes here, "Declare the Lord God of hosts" (19). "Your own wickedness will correct you, and your apostasies will reprove you; know therefore and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the Lord your God, and the dread of Me is not in you," (19); it is felt that when Jeremiah is talking this severe judgment to the people, he repeats his message on there. Without hesitation to this ministry which was erected as a prophet, Jeremiah seems to offering himself here. "Probably I will get a bad deal, however this signal must be transmitted"; it is felt resolution of Jeremiah comes here. The situation may be different, but it is felt we must have such resolution of Jeremiah. "Continue to speak the words of the Lord!"; we want to notice it.
