Even the prayer..., butJeremiah 11:1-14Ⅰ The Israeli faith form
2 Peter 3:8-13
"The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying," (1); a new message begins, by the opening sentence of the fixed form. At this place, "Destroying of the covenant" is dealt with; and because it is the background of the prophet that defines the whole of Jeremiah this "covenant" is extremely important, as the root that Israel has survived as a chosen people of God. King Jehoiakim was born in royal of David, but was mediocrity; but, why he has complicit as a protagonist to destroy this agreement? I want to see its around with the addition of detailed description. Yes, it is. Although "this destroying of the contract" was what God declared, it should be counted in a central sin committed by Israel.
"Hear the words of the covenant, and speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, "Cursed is the man who does not heed the the words of this covenant which I commanded your forefathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, 'Listen to My voice, and do according to all which I commanded you; so you shall be My people, and I will be your God,'" (2-4) The way of speaking is different, but this is the same as the words that God said to Moses ahead of the Ten Commandments conferment in Exodus Chapter 19, when Israel was billeted at the foot of Mount Sinai. Israel made a contract with God in this Sinai Peninsula. "Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine;" (19:5)
The covenant is a law system which begins in the Moses' Ten Commandments of Exodus of Chapter 20. And it is a form of faith that is condensed into a cultus of Israel in the sanctuary of Shiloh and Shechem, mainly on the later cultus. This is called a "Sinai covenant". This is a covenant theology that prophecy of Jeremiah is based on; and also such word of cultus covenant comes out often, but it is in that meaning. This was succeeded to the unification Israel kingdom of the David dynasty from the 12 Tribes Union which assumed Yahweh the only King before long (Amphictyony), and, mainly on rituals to be performed at the shrine in Jerusalem that was the holy place of the kingdom, it was aimed to establish the faith of Yahweh. This is called the "Covenant of David", but it has a large discontinuity from the Covenant of Sinai (not touch now), those are ersatz; but it became a form of the covenant of Sinai, by God's authentication (2 Samuel Chapter 7, by Nathan). And it became a state of syncretism (mixing religion) by adding paganism in the shrine, and seemed to have been the state of confusion.
Ⅱ Blessing, or curse
"In order to confirm the oath which I swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day" "Amen, O Lord." (5) This agreement of the prophet "Amen" will be his confession of faith to the sacred contract tradition. Because it was the ingrained tradition of Israel in the body of Jeremiah who was born there and raised in the house of the priest; and when we hear this is his "Amen", including the "curse" and it is also the message that he must speak to the people, a pain of Jeremiah seems to come to us. I don't know when this is, but probably, it might be just before the King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia marched towards Judah again before the times of the king Jehoiakim (BC 601). It was the time that Jehoiakim betrayed Babylonia that obeyed once; he thought if he must receive 2nd march of Babylonia, it is more better to obey Egypt imposing a heavy tax as cannot endure. He thought, heavy taxes should pass on the people. There is it in 2 Kings 24:1, "In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up (601), and Jehoiakim became his servant for three years (604); it seems that it will be Jeremiah 12:7-13. "I have forsaken My house, I have abandoned My inheritance; I have given the beloved of My soul into the hand of her enemies." (12) In 新改訳 Version, this "I" is like Jeremiah, but probably this will be God. This is sadness of God. In conjunction with a military expedition of Babylonia, the neighboring nations came to plunder Judah.
This "Amen" of Jeremiah, it was Jeremiah response leading to destruction of the contract to receive the curse of the Lord, and I feel it was his pain. The next words of the Lord seem to support it. "Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, 'Hear the words of this covenant and do them. For I solemnly warned your fathers in the day that I brought them up from the land of Egypt, even to this day, warning persistently, saying, "Listen to My voice." Yet they did not obey or incline their ear, but walked, each one, in the stubbornness of his evil heart; therefore I brought on them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not.'" (6-8). "Therefore I brought on them all the words of this covenant"; in the cultus covenant which performed in the shrine, probably, it will refer to the fact that the words of the curse had been chanting by the priest or the congregation at the same time as the words of blessing. Moses commanded in his parting sermon that a half of 12 tribes climbed on the Mt. Gejirimu and sing the words of the blessing and a half climbed on the Ebal mountain and sing the words of the blessing. It was a prototype of the ritual covenant.
Ⅲ Even the prayer..., but
As for the cultus covenant carried out in a shrine, there were statue of Baal and of Queen, the Ishtar goddess of the sky, in the same shrine; so Yahweh and gods of the paganism became mixed-up, and under the such situation, the jealousy of gods was caused. Such as the dignity of Yahweh had been blown away somewhere. In the sanctuary of Israel, it has been once filled with the faith of ancestors saying that they worship only the Creator, the Yahweh who is God of the world; but now, such faith is not found at all. Stupidity of Jehoiakim completely has erased single-minded faith of the king father Josiah. God did not cancel the covenant, but the one who has destroyed the covenant was Israel. God said that He would curse the people, according to the covenant, and it was declaration of God. "A conspiracy has been found among the men of Judah and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem. They have turned back to the iniquities of their ancestors who refused to hear My words, and they have gone after other gods to serve them; the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant which I made with their fathers." Therefor thus says the Lord, "Behold I am bringing disaster on them which they will not be able to escape; though they will cry to Me, yet I will not listen to them. Then the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem will go and cry to the gods to whom they burn incense, but they surely will not save them in the time of their disaster. For your gods are as many as your cities, O Judah; and as many as the streets of Jerusalem are the alters you have set up to the shameful thing, alters to burn incense to Baal." (9-13)
This declaration is a decision. The time can not turn back anymore. Until now, even if how severe message has been told, the chance, "Repent and return to Me. You will not be too late.", has been incorporated somewhere. However, such a chance is not anymore. I hope this will be not in the present age. Will not we, modern, be put in the similar situation now, too? Now, people want to rely on unaccountable spirits and religions; so, in the bookstores, a lot of strange books are lined with. However, there is no salvation without the Gospel of Jesus. However, the modern people are not going to hear this. I don't want to think so, but will it be already beyond cure? "Therefore do not pray for this people, nor lift up a cry or prayer for them; for I will not listen when they call to Me because of their disaster." (14) Still Jeremiah would pray for these obstinate people. However, the Lord refuses that prayer. In this present age, it is going to the worst situation; anyone thinks it is already certain, but even the prayer will be already too late? No; for our modern, there is the Lord Jesus Christ, He had been hanged on the cross, but revived. We are waiting for the "new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells." (2 Peter 3:13) ". Please remember it..
