10 Elisha(4)

Listen to words of the Lord

UKings 3:1-27
TCorinthians 1:18
T An appearance of prophet Elisha

It is the fourth of Elisha. Elisha who saw off Elijah returned to Gilgal, in the mountain of Samaria, and began training of the prophet group, as a successor of Elijah, and would go out in many places and work as a prophet. Many prophets were gathered to Gilgal from other places, too, and the name of Elisha as a prophet became well known.

It passed 3 or 4 years, and, in the times of Jehoram, the son of Ahab, the name of Elisha appeared again. There is it, "when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel."(5) Moab is relation to be relative of Israel with a descendant of a nephew Lot of Abraham. They attached with Israel and parted, but became next a dependency of north kingdom in the times of father Omuri of Ahab, and betrayed after the death of Ahab at the times of Ahaziah King. In East of death Sea, it was a grain belt called transformer Jordan, and they might gather strength in dozens of years that were a dependency, and would revolt. Jehoram just after the enthronement was so afraid of them and was going to be opposed to Moabites in search of an ally. Jehoram was going to make a surprise attack to Moab from the south via, but in the southing middle, he called out to Jehoshaphat king of south kingdom and more south Edom king. Because Jehoshaphat had gained victory for a fight with Moab before (UChronicles Chapter 20), he would think this fight to be an easy victory.

However, that neighborhood fell into shortage of water in a moment in the wasteland of a dry zone. Jehoram despaired with thus, "Alas! For the Lord has called these three kings to give them into hand of Moab." (10), but, Jehoshaphat asked without throwing away a wish, "Is there not a prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of the Lord by him?" (11). And one of Israel's servant said, "Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.". There would be Elisha near Edom at that time. Three people went to Elisha, and asked will of the Lord. However, Elisha said, "What do I have to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother." (13). Jehoram still continued the Baal worship that Ahab and Jezebel planted. Elisha had been caught to stamp out Baal faith which was thriving in Israel as a successor of Elijah.

U Stare at God

Against a cold answer of Elisha, Jehoram insisted to want to hear words of the Lord / Yahweh. "No, for the Lord has called these three kings together to give them into the hand of Moab" (13) Then, Elisha asked will of the Lord for "Jehoshaphat the king of Judah,"(14).

Elisha, he remained to a leader of a prophet group of north kingdom as a successor of Elijah and would work for faith recovery of the people, but, why did he pay attention to south kingdom for "Jehoshaphat"? The first reason is because he wanted to step and to stop as the pivot of Israeli Yahweh faith to the south kingdom which was a genealogy of king David and was trusted as "My servant" by God. Because it was in front of Jehoshaphat of south Judah kingdom, Jehoram had come to encounter prophet Elisha, but, in fact, both Jehoram and Edom King were ignorant about Yahweh faith, and Jehoshaphat already had lost his faith, too. Jehoshaphat is a son of Asa king, and he became a king at 35 years old and his throne was 25 years, and his most days were written thus, "And he walked in the way of his father Asa and did not depart from it." (UChronicles 20:32). However, a reporter of Chronicles criticized it right later, "And after this Jehoshaphat king of Judah allied himself with Ahaziah king of Israel."(20:35). Would he wish that such Jehoshaphat take faithful faith of the beginning and come back?

And there is one more reason, the one whom Elisha had looked was Jehoram after all, and he invoked Jehoshaphat daringly here. In other words, it had been a message of prophet Elisha. Elisha ignored Jehoram, it was because God ignored Jehoram, and because he ignores God, God would have assumed him the person who was not there. A principle of faith told that "If God be for us, who can be against us?" last week is told here, too. If somebody fights against God, God also fights against him, we should be mindful so. If we stare at God, God minds us, too.

V Listen to words of the Lord

While saying he ignores it, Elisha considered Jehoram, and there is an article that it seems his dilemma appears.

While adding a reason with "For Jehoshaphat", Elisha demanded an oracle of the Lord. In an interesting thing, he invited a player of minstrel and used the different method that received an oracle of the Lord everytime minstrel sounded. Now, three people (Jehoram, Jehoshaphat and Edom king) stood before Elisha. In fact, while these three people were saying that came over to hear words of the Lord, Elisha saw through their hearts of non-faith firmly, and he told words of prophecy in the accompaniment of music. It would be to show an oracle of the Lord in clear form to them. "Make this valley full of trenches", "You shall not see wind nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you shall drink, both you and your cattle and your beasts.", and these oracles of the Lord he told rhyme in the original language and it seems like poetry or songs. It was surely words of the Lord, but probably it was similar, and it seemed to be a thing tinged with a play, but surely, they drank water according to that words, in the morning. They looked at the wonder that water flowed through to the valley and would think that God gave them victory? However, what Elisha prayed was not concerned with the success or failure of a thing, but it was that they will hear words of the Lord, and restore faith to the Lord. And it will be say to us of the present age, too.

This time, they broke down Moab and put a big win. Would it be a blessing to them as expected? I do not think so. Because the sun lighted up the surface of the water and looked like blood red-hot, Moabites said. "This is blood; the kings have surely fought together, and they have slain one another."(23) As for an alliance of the north kingdom, the south kingdom and Edom, judging from eyes of Moab, it had one side that it was not mysterious when even if antagonism happened. God obviously brought such victory to them, and because words of the Lord told through Elisha were realized I feel that testimony of reporter's description of Kings was put here. Hear the voice of a prophet, and listen to words of the Lord! It was a only message of Elisha. "The word of the cross is ... but to us who are being saved it is the power of God" (TCorinthians 1:18), and we want to hear that Jesus forgave our crime by the cross.
