Only God

UKings 9:1-10
Romans 9:22-26
T In disbelief a female

We have watched that Elisha went out to Damascus, and met Hazael who would wake up coup d'etat, from Chapter 8 last week. He was the caliber whom God chose as a person who fights against Israel. Israel ran after Cannan civilization and ran to their God Baal worship and lost sight of God. The reason why Hazael was put up was to remove such Israeli disbelief. About him, God said to Elisha "You shall anoint Hazael king over Aram;", but perhaps, it seems that Elisha prolonged that he put up him, because Elisha has prayed for the Israeli continuation. However, would it be a plan of God?, Hazael turned up before him at last. While Elisha sheds tears, he foresaw the future of Hazael. "Because I know the evil that you will do to the sons of Israel: their strongholds you will set on fire, and their young men you will kill with the sword, and their little ones you will dash in pieces, and their women with child you will rip up." (8:12)

Up till now, Elisha has connived at Canan in Israel. Cannan in Israel; it resembles the state of Japan of the Meiji Restoration, it started the fight in the decadent culture for taking in European and American civilization and technology, and at last it finished Rokumei-kan period which was called noisy culture. He might have thought that it is difficult to stop Israeli civilization. And rather, so that Israel keep peace with the countries, he became a consultant of King positively and cared about negotiations with Aram. However, God made their ideal method that lost sight of God a problem, not Israeli civilization. He put up Hazael to fight against royal families as the first ringleader of Israeli Cannan. When also Elisha must accomplish that duty as a successor of Elijah by all means, he would decide it. He was going to open a handle of the political participation which had avoided all the time so far. It was the first step of Omri dynasty destruction and the anointing of Jehu of Chapter 9.

U On full power and

The anointing of Jehu was that God had said to Elijah. "And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel;"(T Kings 19:16) Jehu also seems to have learned it, too. (10:10) By an opportunity of coup d'etat of Hazael, Elisha made up his mind to carry out an order of God which was entrusted. He invited one of the sons of the prophets and said. "Now Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets, and said to him, 'Gird up your loins, and take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead. When you arrive there, search out Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in and bid him arise from among his brothers, and bring him to an inner room. Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, "Thus says the Lord, 'I have anointed you king over Israel.' Then open the door and flee and do not wait."(9:1-3)

However, Elisha was not going to go to Jehu by oneself, and put up an agent to anoint Jehu, for some reason. There is it with "one of the sons of the prophets", but, at Verse 4, it is "the young man, the servant of the prophet,". And now, Elisha enflamed such a youth and sent out as one of the prophets. Here, I want to try to think about that reason, the youth was sent out as a prophet, but it was emergency, therefore he did not seem to have gone to Jehu with a peculiar appearance to understand with a prophet at first sight. It has an impression as the youth that there is it anywhere. Probably, it was dangerous job to anoint to Jehu, therefore, he would choose the person like this youth who did not attract attention, and do anointing to Jehu. He was a youth, but he may be an excellent young man desired to be a prophet. He would understand that it was dangerous work and also had to convey a message of Elisha precisely. Elisha entrusted him with full power of prophet Elisha on the faith of him. If he failed, King Jehoram would attack not only Elisha but also all prophets group in a moment, and it would be no doubt to put all of them on the sword. Therefore he added it, if he anointed Jehu and conveyed a message of Elisha, "flee and do not wait". He also ran away soon at full speed, too.

V Only God

When he reached Ramoth-gilead, the officers were holding a meeting. Gilgal was a battlefield of Israel and Moab for a long time in a mountainous area of the east Jordan, but it is a main battlefield with Aram now. During reconciliation for a while, there was quiet there, but, since Hazael became King, it came back to a battlefield of the two countries. A meeting of officers was opened at that center / Ramoth-gilead, perhaps it was a strategy meeting, but Jehu came over at the time of that meeting! Usually, it seemed to be difficult naturally, but it came true easily, because the consideration of God was there. Would this youth feel a hand of God?, he anointed Jehu suddenly and said, without any introduction or explanation. "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'I have anointed you king over the people of the Lord, even over Israel. And you shall strike the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel. For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male person both bond and free in Israel. And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezebel, and none shall bury her.'"(6-10)

Elisha entrusted this youth with such a message. I am surprised when Elisha conveyed such a so drastic message, but also, I feel that Elisha determined to cut off a root of evil of the Northern Kingdom in order to carry out responsibility as a successor of Elijah, and this determination of Elisha moved this youth. It teach us we must learn more readiness and faithfulness to convey the words of God. This youth decided his mind to be employed as a prophet, and Jehu also recognized him as a prophet and heard his words as a fair thing. Jehu would take in determination of prophet Elisha through this youth, too.

The center part of this message will be that "I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezbel.". Jehu carried out that words faithfully, and Chapter 9-10 are colored by bloodshed to a house of Ahab. These are very vividly, and we feel even a shiver, but a wish to be Israel led by God will be emphasized. The Northern Kingdom was ruined by a hand of Assyria after next 100 years and a little, and editors of Kings generalized a cause of Northern Kingdom extinction and explained it; "Now this came about, because the sons of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who brought them up from the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and they had feared other gods and walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord had driven out before the sons of Israel, and in the customs of the kings of Israel which they had introduced."(17:7-8). We must know that God whom we believe in is the only One in both the sky and the ground, and demands that we follow this One through our life. Elisha and this youth and Jehu paid more attention to this one point, and accomplished that role as so strong. And there is it in the testimony of Paul (Romans 9:22-26); and we want to learn that God who gets angry at us who have crimes is God of patience and also He is wanting to be the Messiah with His rich generosity.
